Android 10 Q: What are we to expect?

Google has begun spreading the sixth and final beta version of the Android 10 Q OS for Google Pixel family smartphones, which means little time left until the final version release. It’s still unknown by the way what dessert is hidden under the Q. Apparently, it will be "decoded" when the final version is ready. We have collected 17 major updates that we will definitely test soon.

Screen recording

Finally, Google will add possibility to record screen actions. Owners of the pure Android devices were forced to use third-party programs for a long time, "enjoying" ads and watermarks on videos. Now, when you hold down the power button, a four option pop-up menu will appear: reboot, shutdown, screen recording, and emergency call.

5G

At the I/O 2019 developer conference, Google talked about 5G support in the new Android version. More than 20 mobile operators will spread fifth-generation networks around the world by the end of the 2019, and the search giant will also take part.

Adaptive work with display cutouts and flexible screens

Gained Android Q Beta 1 access on the Pixel 3 XL smartphone some enthusiasts found out that the system now takes into account the shape of the display and the

presence of cutouts when making a screenshot. This may indicate a better cutouts and rounded corners integration. Perhaps Android users will forget about cropped interface elements in some apps.

Moreover, Android Q will have foldable phones native support. It is still unknown how it gonna work, but the developers already have foldable phones emulator. This feature supports 7.3 or 8-inch virtual displays in open position and 4.6 or 6.6-inch when folded.

Live Captions

This new function allows you to transform absolutely any audio into text in real time. In theory, it will allow you to watch videos without sound. It’s a useful thing for hearing-impaired persons. This innovation will also be especially relevant for Instagram stories. Many users watch them without sound, and now they can read everything that the blogger is talking about. Transcription takes place directly on the device and can work without permanent Internet connection, as Google says.

Desktop mode

Desktop mode This innovation traces were discovered in the source code by the enthusiasts from XDA-developers. If this mode is really implemented in the OS, then a smartphone or tablet when connecting a monitor, keyboard and mouse can become a replacement for the desktop. However, it's not that simple, because Samsung and Huawei solutions work with the use of brand docking stations.

Gesture control

According to the testers of the first beta version, Android Q resembles iPhone X. So, swipe left brings you back to the previous app, and swiping up and holding down brings up a list of running apps. In the second beta version the virtual navigation bar still in place, but open apps can already be swiped at any direction. In the third beta version the buttons were completely removed – swipe from left to right will bring up the menu and if you want to go back you will have to do a double swipe from left to right. In this form, the system is likely to migrate to the final version.

Bubbles

In Android Q Beta 2 released in April 2019 a new feature was discovered. “Bubbles” of messages from the Google Message app pop up on the home screen. Facebook Messenger also acts in the same way. This function might work in all messengers.

By the way, smart responses to pushes are also connected with “bubbles”. The user will be offered different answers to incoming messages right in the notification window. Responses will be generated based on the text of the incoming message.

In addition to text the system will also offer some actions that may be connected with installed apps. For example, if your friend is waiting for you and texts you about it, you can immediately build a route to him or her with Google Maps directly from the notification.

Facial recognition 3D

Many Android devices makers are experimenting with facing recognition technology, but a full-fledged function like Apple Face ID, Android still doesn't have. All these drawbacks gonna be eliminated by Android Q native support for facing recognition 3D. This will make technology much more affordable.

Camera

In Android Q apps depth maps will be used. They are formed by the camera portrait mode. This is expected to simplify photo editing.

Dark Theme

A Dark Theme has become one of the main features of the new Android 10 OS. It will be aimed at saving OLED-screens devices' energy. To display completely black colour, the pixels on the screen simply start going out and this saves battery power greatly. The option can be either manually activated or when the power saving mode is turned on.

Sensors' deactivating

In the developer assembly of Android Q, which hit the network in January 2019, an extended Airplane Mode was discovered. Sensor Privacy disables all sensors in the device. Its use purpose is not fully understood, perhaps it will provide more privacy.

File Type Filtering

The built-in Android file manager was deprived of the fine data filtering possibility. So, you couldn’t sort files by their types. Android Q will provide this function.

Update privacy

In the tenth Android version, a new section which includes all the functions related to data protection will appear in the settings menu. Now the user will be able to restrict access to the location for the app exclusively for the software launch duration. It will allow to avoid unauthorized surveillance on a person.

In the new version of Android security updates will be installed in the background and without rebooting the gadget. By the way, Android devices can get further security updates without the full OS updating. Google called it Project Mainline.

Focus mode

Android 10 Q will also protect the user from procrastination. The new Focus Mode is a great way to protect yourself from social networks, instant messengers, news services and other resources that are trying to take precious time.

Parental control

Since the age of mobile users is decreasing, a new tool has been built into the system. Besides the fact that you can choose apps to install, when and for how long they can be used and at what time your child should turn off the device and go to bed, in the new version of Android you can also reward your child for good behavior by giving him or her for example extra time of device using.
